Thermal Transfer Overprinters (TTO) for Flexible Packaging
A TTO printer transfers ink from a ribbon onto flexible film, pouches and labels. It is the standard choice for date codes, batch numbers and barcodes on food and pharmaceutical packaging where a crisp, high-contrast code is required.

| Model | Configuration | Print lines | Technology | Print height | Max speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TTO 32×46 Intermittent | Intermittent | Variable | Thermal transfer | 32 × 46 mm | 225 mm/s · up to 500 prints/min | Intermittent packaging machines with a 32 × 46 mm print area. |
| TTO 32×46 Continuous | Continuous | Variable | Thermal transfer | 32 × 46 mm | 50–650 mm/s | Continuous film and pouch lines that need a compact code area. |
| TTO 53×53 Intermittent | Intermittent | Variable | Thermal transfer | 53 × 53 mm | 225 mm/s · up to 500 prints/min | Larger codes, logos and multi-line data on intermittent machines. |
| TTO 53×53 Continuous | Continuous | Variable | Thermal transfer | 53 × 53 mm | 50–650 mm/s | High-speed flexible packaging with a larger print area. |
What you can mark, and how

Common questions
What is the difference between intermittent and continuous TTO?
Intermittent TTO prints while the packaging machine pauses or indexes. Continuous TTO prints while the film moves at a constant speed. The correct type depends on your packaging machine.
Which ribbon do I need?
Ribbon grade depends on the film, the required contrast and any heat or abrasion resistance requirement. We confirm the ribbon with the sample test.
Can it print on stand-up pouches?
Yes, TTO is widely used on stand-up pouches, sachets and flexible film. The print area and mounting position need to suit the pouch shape.
What is the maximum speed?
Up to 650 mm/s for continuous models, or up to 500 prints per minute for intermittent models, depending on the code size.
Does it integrate with my packaging machine?
Yes. The print unit receives a trigger from the packaging machine and mounts on the film path. Share the machine model and we will confirm the interface.

Crisp codes on flexible packaging
Intermittent or continuous
An intermittent TTO prints while the packaging machine pauses or indexes. A continuous TTO prints while the film moves at a steady speed. The correct type depends on the packaging machine, not on the printer alone. Print areas of 32×46 mm and 53×53 mm cover most date, batch and logo layouts.
Ribbon and integration
Ribbon grade depends on the film, the required contrast and any heat or abrasion resistance requirement. The compact print unit mounts on form-fill-seal, pouch and labeling machines. Share the packaging machine model and film type so we can confirm the mounting and signal interface.
How a thermal transfer overprinter works on flexible film
A thermal transfer overprinter transfers ink from a ribbon onto flexible packaging as the film passes the print head. It is the standard choice for pouches, sachets, flow-wrap and labels because the code is crisp, dry on contact and does not smudge on a fast form-fill-seal machine. The print unit mounts on the packaging machine, so the code is applied in the same pass as the fill and seal.
Ribbon, film and mounting
The ribbon has to match the film: wax for paper and uncoated surfaces, wax-resin for coated film, resin where the code must resist heat, abrasion or solvent. The print head wears with use and is a consumable, so plan the spare and the cleaning routine. Mounting and signal timing are agreed with the packaging-machine supplier, because the overprinter needs a trigger from the machine, not from a separate sensor.
If the product is a carton rather than a film, compare TIJ. To check every code, add vision inspection. Background: thermal transfer printing.
